What is this “Pathinettu”? It means number 18 in Tamil. It’s an old massive structure that moves as fast as a snail. It’s the name given to this entity. It’s nothing other than the old bus which comes to Kadambankulam twice a day. Why is it so important to Kadambankulam? The answer is so simple; it’s one among the two buses that come to my village. I remember this bus since my childhood. It started its service a way long back. That is why I guess I never know when this bus service started. And the other bus which comes to my village started its service when I was a child. I still remember how people welcomed this bus when it started its service to my village. They wore garland and fired crackers to welcome this bus when it came to my village first.

This bus is from Vallioor to Koodankulam. When the nuclear power plant started in koodankulam I expected our government to leave a new bus. But it dint happen. Whenever there are new buses released by government we expect they would change our bus. But they are only making the case worse. The bus doesn’t have unmoving parts. All the parts in it moves. I mean all the bars, seats etc etc.

Once, it was the only public transport to my village. Students used to take this bus for two reasons. First reason is the free bus pass provided by the government and the second reason is that it is the only bus which comes in that time. This bus will come almost empty to my village and when it leaves my village it will be full.

There were times when guys used to bunk classes if this bus hasn’t come to pick them to school. Now things have changed a lot, yet the bus has not changed. It is still the same old structure which comes twice a day.

Bus No – 18 has become the part and parcel of my village.

Miss the days when I traveled in this bus.

It’s EMT time now. One year has passed since last EMT. Time moves so quick. It was full of fun last year during EMT. This year there are just memories about them. For friends who don’t know what EMT is: EMT (Evangeline Memorial Tournament) is a South India level sports tournament conducted by Karunya University every year in the month of September. It’s the only fun filled event for Karunyans.
Last year EMT was packed with loads and loads of fun. The fun starts from the preparation for the EMT itself. It’s a tradition to design and print a department t-shirt every year. Since we missed this fun in the third year, we dint want to miss it in the final year. T-shirt design started much early and was printed and was out on the EMT day.

Final CSE C 2010

Next there is a compulsion to work for EMT to earn non-academic credits in our college. Since many of us lacked credits, we were forced to do some work to earn credits. That was left for the juniors to work and we get the credits.
Next fun is in cheering the teams for the match. “Sasi Kumar” from our class played for volley ball team representing Karunya. Cheering our boys and shouting like thunder to encourage them is another fun.
Next fun is in the food court. I don’t think we forgot our Sankar and Nelson matter and also the Kakka matter. It’s was all fun. Now they are just sweet memories of our college life. Those days are never going to return. Those moments are cherished forever in my life.

Final CSE C 2010

It was around one year back that this event happened. It was a normal day, I don’t remember if anything strange had happened that day. It was about 9 p.m. I used to sleep alone in the first floor of my house. Let me explain the design of my house. First floor has two bed rooms, a toilet, a hall and a balcony. One side of the hall has a swing. I used to sleep in one of the bedrooms. I used to sleep there since our house was built.
The swing was a latter addition to our house. I had never slept in the swing. I had the desire to sleep in the swing in the hall for a long time. That night I decided to sleep in the swing. I took my pillow and bed sheets from my bed and moved to the swing.
I used to have my dinner and move to the first floor quickly to message my girl friends because no one will be there to disturb me. I lay down on the swing and started messaging one of my girl friends. A normal conversation went on between us. Usually her last message would be “Good night. Sweet dreams”. But that night it was kind of strange. It read “Good night. You will get devil dreams tonight”. The actual reason for this message was that I was playing with her saying that Trisha came in my dream the previous night.
It was time for me to sleep. I am from a village and people usually sleep by 9 pm and wake up early to start their work in their farm. It was around 10 pm. It was high time for me to sleep. I never thought I would have a nightmare that night. I had a good sleep. In the midst of the sleep I had a dream.

The dream went like this. In the dream I am lying on the same swing and a lady is moving towards me. Let me explain her. She was a woman of normal height; a bit pale, in white saree (which is the default dress for devils in Tamilnadu). She bent towards me and held my knees strong to the swing. At that very moment I understood that it was a dream and the next thought in my mind was “Sugan wake up, it’s just a dream”.
What happened then was really a shocking thing. I was not able to wake up. The thought which was going in my mind was “Wake up, it’s just a dream”. But I couldn’t. Then I started doubting whether it was a dream or it was a real devil in front of me playing pranks with me. I struggled a lot to wake up. I shook my hands and legs to wake up, but in vain. After a few minutes of struggle I woke up. None was there. I moved to the place where I usually sleep and had a sound sleep. I won’t say it’s just a dream. It’s a nightmare. Might be its some kind of mental trauma or something like that. But it was my first experience with the evil spirit and wish it will be the last one too. After this incident I never dare to sleep in that swing again.
When I shared this incident with my friends, I learnt that some others also have had few experiences like this. Do you have one? If so post it as a comment.

Yesterday when I was having sandwich here in Mysore Infosys campus, I thought back of my childhood days in my village. I used to go to temple every day evening to collect “Arasam pazham” a fruit from the peepal tree (Ficus religiosa). We used to collect it and prick it with a stick and take home. I got reminded of those “Orange mittai”, which we get for 5 paise, and how we mixed them with fruits and made it a mixture and ate. Those were the golden days of my life.
One day, one of my friends, who is also from a village, and I started discussing about our village life. I started telling him how we used to eat when we were kids. I used to go to my aunt’s home and there in the front yard everyone will gather bringing food from their home. We will sit in a circle and share food (At times even with Rani-our family dog).

Kadambankulam

My village Kadambankulam has lots of “panai maram” (Palmyra palm – Borassus flabellifer). The main occupation of the people in my village depends on these trees. In my grandma’s home, it’s a routine for her to go and collect the mangoes and cashew nuts from our farm. We used to accompany her to the farm, which is located in the foot hills of Western Ghats. We used to see monkeys, snakes and peacocks there. It was a kind of wildlife safari by walk. And then we would have “pathaneer”, a liquid product from palm tree. Those days are never going to return back. We had also gone into the forest to pick “naaval” fruits (Syzigium cumini). I can get these fruits even now in cities but the excitement of going into the forest to get the fruits fresh will never come back.
If we are there at our grandma’s home, there will be lots of food to eat. There will be all kinds of products from palm trees.
•	Pathaneer
There are two different flavors for this drink. One is by adding noongu and the other by adding mango to it. There is also something called maalai pathaneer.
•	Noongu
The one we get in cities is the one we throw without eating in villages. They don’t have the real taste.
•	Thavun
If the seed of palm tree is made to germinate, a white substance is found inside the seed which is called Thavun. If it’s too ripe we call it as kanji thavun and I like it the most.
•	Panangai
They put the fruit of palm tree in fire to cook it well and then cut it into pieces.
•	Panang-kilangu
When the seed germinates the root forms an edible substance called panangkilangu.
Fishing in the pond with the small children, grandma’s kilangu kootu, chow mittai – they used to tie it in the hand like watch and children used to lick it. Missing them all…
This is the list of sweets which I enjoyed in my childhood days but I am missing them now.
•	Thaen mittai
•	Ural mittai
•	Kal koona
•	Illantham pazham
•	Suthu mittai
•	Palli mittai
•	Jeeraga mittai
•	Inji mittai
•	Kadalai mittai
•	Appala pori
•	Pori urundai
•	Orange mittai
•	Aasai chocolate
•	Pulippu mittai
•	Kuchi mittai
•	Bubble gums, which will have the cricketers’ pictures
•	Caramilk chocolate – with red, blue covers
•	Lacto King chocolate (the old ones had better flavors)
•	Panju mittai
•	Thaengai mittai
•	Kuchi ice i.e Ice lolly (Paal ice, Semiya ice)

If I had missed something pls comment them
